چکیده

The study of shell-type supernova remnants is a key science focus for the VERITAS TeV telescope array. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are widely considered to be the strongest candidate for the source of cosmic rays below the knee around 10 eV. This presentation will highlight new VERITAS results including new measurements of the spectra of Cas A and IC 443. These results and their implications for the nature of the cosmic rays hadronic or electronic accelerated in the remnants will be discussed.

Observations of Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebulae: A VERITAS Key Science Project

The study of supernova remnants and pulsar wind nebulae was one of the Key Science Projects for the first two years of VERITAS observations. VERITAS is an array of four imaging Cherenkov telescopes located at the Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona. Supernova remnants are widely considered to be the strongest candidate for the source of cosmic rays below the knee at around 10 eV. Pulsar win...

Recent VERITAS Results on Galactic Supernova Remnants and Pulsar Wind Nebula

Supernova remnants (SNR) and pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) are among the most numerous of TeV-emitting objects in the sky and provide excellent laboratories for the investigation of high-energy particle acceleration in astrophysical environments. In many cases, their relative proximity to earth and resultant large angular sizes allow for detailed mapping of emission regions and precise correlations...

Search for TeV Emission from Geminga by VERITAS

The Geminga gamma ray source was first detected by SAS-2 and COS-B, and has been identified as a radio-quiet pulsar associated with a 300,000 year old supernova remnant. Geminga is one of the brightest GeV sources and was also detected by Milagro at energies greater than 20 TeV. During 2007 VERITAS performed observations to search for TeV gamma ray emission from the Geminga pulsar and the regio...

X-ray Observations of Young Supernova Remnants

This brief review of recent X-ray observations of young supernova remnants highlights results obtained by the Chandra and XMM Newton Observatories since their launch last year. Their impressive capabilities are illustrated by results for spectral imaging, and for spatially resolved spectroscopy that isolates emission from individual ejecta knots and from the forward shock. I also review X-ray d...

Six Years of Chandra Observations of Supernova Remnants

We present a review of the first six years of Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of supernova remnants. From the official ”first-light” observation of Cassiopeia A that revealed for the first time the compact remnant of the explosion, to the recent million-second spectrally-resolved observation that revealed new details of the stellar composition and dynamics of the original explosion, Chan...
